How to Fix Damaged Emotions Biblically

fix-damaged-emotions

Emotional healing is something that every person needs. To one degree or another, we have all been wounded emotionally. There are many variations of emotional brokenness and pain depending on individuals. Whether the cause is natural or because of another’s sin, the majority of people fight some type of emotional battle.

The major symptoms of emotional problems includes:
  1. sleeplessness
  2. detachment
  3. depression
  4. anger
  5. isolation
  6. bitterness
  7. frustration and
  8. fear.
The common causes of emotional problems includes:
  1. abandonment
  2. broken trust
  3. chronic pain or illness
  4. rejection
  5. a lack of community support and
  6. a sense of life’s meaninglessness.
Can a person truly flounder to the surface of this deteriorating cultural wave and find emotional healing?

Biblically YES!.

But first, let us consider the reality. Unfortunately in our culture today, we are increasingly drawn away from community and toward individualism, away from trustworthy behavior and toward selfishness, away from morals that give our lives purpose and toward existentialism and post-modernism that detach us from one another, away from healthy choices and healthy practices and toward instant gratification that degrades our physical health.

Accepting Jesus Christ as our savior without full commitment may NOT even resolve our maladies of emotional healing. We also need to realize that we are flesh-bound creatures.

So what does God expects us to do…

Following God is the first step to emotional healing. Why? Because He is the One who restores our souls (Psalm 23:3). One of the main reasons why Jesus came, is to heal our broken heartedness (Luke 4:18).

We must choose the following three main healthy practices in order to experience emotional healing

  1. healthy interactions with other believers – men and women of like precious faith (1 Peter 3:8–12). You may have to dissociate yourself from negative minded people.
  2. healthy thinking based on the truth of God’s Word – daily study of God’s Word (Philippians 4:4–9)
  3. healthy activities that benefit your body. 2 Corinthians 7:1 declares; “…since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God”.

We need to remember that healing is a process. It involves moment-by-moment choices to trust and obey the Lord consistently. There is no quick and easy path to emotional healing. Jesus said, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Apostle Paul battled with the flesh and spoke of how it stubbornly resisted the desires of his will and spirit to follow God (Romans 7:18–25).

All Things Are Possible To Those That Believe (Mark 9:23)

Jesus Christ can and is willing to help us find emotional healing through the help of Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is referred to as a Spirit of kindness, selflessness, truth, and trustworthiness. When we are in-dwelt with His Spirit, He can and will delight to make us the kind of people who can trust and be trusted by others, resulting in better relationships all around (John 7:38).

The Seven Biblical Solutions To Find Emotional Healing
  1. Meditate on God’s Word – the Bible daily. Proverbs 4:22 declares; “God’s instructions are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body”. The person whose “delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night” is blessed (Psalm 1:1–2).
  2. Confess any known sins to God. The Bible says in 1 John 1:9;  “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
  3. Take control of your thoughts—Allow Holy Spirit to take control of those thoughts. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 10:5; “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ..”.
  4. Refuse to fall back into old, sinful habits. “We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6). You have been called to holiness and to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4).
  5. See yourself as God sees you: (1) As loved (Romans 5:8); (2) As gifted (2 Timothy 1:7); (3) As set free (John 8:36); and (4) As blood washed, sanctified, and justified (1 Corinthians 6:11).
  6. Get involved in a Bible-teaching local church or ministry and open yourself to their fellowship and teaching ministry. If you do not have one, we welcome you to watch our live stream services  every Sunday from your home. Click here to learn more. God gives spiritual gifts to His church as in the five-fold ministry in order to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up (Ephesians 4:12). Part of the function of those in the five-fold ministry is to aid the healing process of those who are emotionally or spiritually wounded.
  7. Forgive those who have hurt you. This is important. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you”. Be cautious of any root of bitterness in the soul (Hebrews 12:15). When you have been hurt, the last thing you may want to hear is that you need to forgive those who have hurt you. The pain may be so intense that you don’t even want to see those who have hurt you. You have been betrayed, rejected, lied about, or perhaps even physically, mentally or emotionally harmed. Yet, God’s will is that you forgive without regard to the circumstances or what they have done to you…

Other Scriptures On Forgiveness

  • Matthew 6:14-15,For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
  • Mark 11:25,And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.
  • Matthew 18:21-22,Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
  • Matthew 6:15,But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
  • Galatians 5:22–23; 1 John 3:19–24, “God finds joy in us producing good fruit and qualities”.

1 Corinthians 10:13 – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].

Romans 8:15-16 – For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Finally remember: God’s best is not about how good or worthy you are, but it is based on your faith in Jesus and what He did for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” God has great plans for your life – the best plans. Simply believe God wants the best for you. Amen!
